Today marks the 1 year anniversary of Spot of Mummery!
I just wanted to take a moment to ramble and thank everyone who has encouraged me to keep on keeping on with this blog!
A Long Process With Some Failure
I know that I’ve mentioned how I originally rolled Amon sometime back in 2017. This was when Mateus was coming into its own as a second RP server, and I really wanted to be part of that. But, I had no idea how to actually approach developing an RP character in the FFXIV universe – though I’ve RPed for a very long time, every fandom is a little different.
In the end, my first attempt at launching this Tumblr didn’t work out. I tried for a few months, didn’t get much traction or progression, and ended up putting it aside.
A year ago today, I decided to refresh my fiction writing skills by taking up the Camp NaNoWriMo July challenge. I wanted to focus on writing a story that could also possibly lead into RP, and post it on Tumblr just to see what happened.
In surveying my many alts to pick one as the main character, I actually almost deleted Amon and repurposed this blog. But something made me stop, and try again to write his story. This time, I was armed with a better knowledge of the lore, a Lore Book, and a better idea of what is appealing/acceptable to the FFXIV RP community.
I started writing the Coming Together story, creating alt characters to support Amon and help develop him. I also spent a good deal of time really thinking about his characterization and how he’d view the world… what made him the way he was, and a bit of his backstory.
Somehow, that second attempt miraculously stuck, and it led up to where this blog is today. Really, much of it is due to the encouragement and friendship you all have shown both Amon and myself.
I understand that folks playing NPC characters are not always preferable to some, especially a character of questionable moral association – and I respect that. So, that makes it even more incredible to have seen the kindness I have.
All the asks and memes and writing prompts and interactions mean so much to me. Thank you for making this past year an incredible one!
May the future and our journey to the First be even more incredible!
Spot of Mummery began as a Tumblr character/story/RP blog. It was launched on June 27, 2018 as part of my attempt to write for Camp NaNoWriMo that year. What came out of it became the Coming Together storyline.
About the Blog
After migrating the Tumblr content to WordPress in December of 2020, I decided to begin expanding to write proper blogging content in 2021. I chose to look at the experiences I’d had over years of being a creative individual within a MMO community, and write about what I’ve learned.
About the Story
“Spot of Mummery” is the tale of two mid-bosses from the Syrcus Tower raid – Amon and Scylla – and how they managed to survive the Warrior of Light’s onslaught, struggling to make a new life for themselves in the land of Eorzea. If you want to know more about WHY I’d choose Amon as a character, check out this page!
This blog archives the foundational content I’ve created for Spot of Mummery, spanning back to mid-2018. It includes screenshots, character maker images, a few character development memes and lots of random Amon-related posts across the years.
You can find Amon and his friends on the Mateus server!
